Bwgcolman Community School is a National Partnership Pre-Prep–12 school located on tropical Palm Island which is 65km north north-west of Townsville in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. In 1993, the school changed its name from Palm Island State School to better reflect the importance the community plays in their children’s education. Our motto '2 Way Strong' also reflects the importance of our students being able to participate in the global community while remaining strong in Palm Island culture and maintaining their identity.
Bwgcolman Community School currently has 320 students spread across 14 classes. As a National Partnership school we have a heavy focus on literacy and numeracy development. We also implement the School wide Positive Behaviour Support program (SWPBS). The school works in partnership with universities like Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Australian Catholic University (ACU) to implement numeracy programs in both Junior School and High School. We also have a relationship with organisations like the Cathy Freeman Foundation (CFF) and Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) who assist with literacy development and programs to boost attendance. We aim to help our students maintain a strong cultural identity while also developing the skills necessary to participate in the global community. Respect, responsibility and safety are at the forefront of everything we do.
